Interpreting lung ultrasound B-lines in acute respiratory failure.

چکیده
Th e article in this issue of CHEST (see page 1586) by Bataille et al 1 on thoracic and lung ultrasonography (LUS) is of high interest. Th is study has the great merit of going in the right direction. To date, scientists explored the potential of LUS alone because it represents a new paradigm. Now, it is time to move on and explore how LUS may further improve diagnostic workup by combining it with other ultrasound modalities and, even more, with other diagnostic tools.

Relevance of lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of acute respiratory failure: the BLUE protocol.
BACKGROUND This study assesses the potential of lung ultrasonography to diagnose acute respiratory failure. METHODS This observational study was conducted in university-affiliated teaching-hospital ICUs. We performed ultrasonography on consecutive patients admitted to the ICU with acute respiratory failure, comparing lung ultrasonography results on initial presentation with the final diagnosi...
متن کاملUtility of lung ultrasound in near-drowning victims.
Drowning and near-drowning are common causes of accidental death worldwide and respiratory complications such as non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, acute respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia are often seen. In other settings lung ultrasound can accurately diagnose these conditions; hence lung ultrasound may have a potential role in the evaluation of drowning or near-drowning victims. In t...

fluids flow against gravity. On the other hand, in the BLUE protocol, all patients had acute respiratory failure, and pulmonary edema nearly always correlated with the B profile. Errors in the final diagnosis, which can never be fully excluded, may explain the few cases (3%) in this study and a previous one4 in which the B profile did not show. Exceptional cases of giant bullous dystrophy may a...
متن کاملLung ultrasound: a new tool for the cardiologist
For many years the lung has been considered off-limits for ultrasound. However, it has been recently shown that lung ultrasound (LUS) may represent a useful tool for the evaluation of many pulmonary conditions in cardiovascular disease. The main application of LUS for the cardiologist is the assessment of B-lines. B-lines are reverberation artifacts, originating from water-thickened pulmonary i...
متن کاملLung ultrasound imaging in avian influenza A (H7N9) respiratory failure
BACKGROUND Lung ultrasound has been shown to identify in real-time, various pathologies of the lung such as pneumonia, viral pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Lung ultrasound maybe a first-line alternative to chest X-ray and CT scan in critically ill patients with respiratory failure. We describe the use of lung ultrasound imaging and findings in two cases of severe res...
